ECOBALLIFE at the Forefront of Sustainable Protection: Connecting European Defence Innovation with Circular Economy Principles
October 5Strengthening European defence capabilities through collaboration and sustainability
European defence cooperation continues to evolve, with collaborative initiatives increasingly focused on delivering capabilities that respond to emerging security needs. Recent developments reported by the European Defence Agency (EDA), including the progression of additional Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) projects into the delivery phase and closer cooperation between the EDA and the EU Military Committee, highlight the importance of coordination, innovation and capability development across Europe.
These developments provide a relevant context for ECOBALLIFE, a project dedicated to advancing sustainable solutions for ballistic protection systems. By bringing sustainability and circular economy principles into the development and lifecycle management of protective technologies, ECOBALLIFE contributes to the broader discussion on how Europe can strengthen its defence capabilities while addressing environmental challenges.
Moving towards more sustainable protection systems
Ballistic protection systems play a vital role in safeguarding military personnel, vehicles and other platforms. However, their design and manufacturing also raise important questions concerning material selection, resource efficiency, durability, repair, reuse and end-of-life management.
Integrating sustainability into these systems requires a lifecycle perspective. This means considering not only the performance and reliability of protective materials, but also the environmental impacts associated with their production, use and eventual disposal.
ECOBALLIFE addresses these challenges by exploring how circular economy approaches can be incorporated into the ballistic protection value chain. Its findings can help inform discussions among manufacturers, researchers, end users and public organisations about the opportunities and practical barriers associated with more sustainable protection technologies.
As European collaborative defence initiatives advance, sustainability can become an important consideration in the development of future capabilities, alongside operational performance, safety and reliability.

ECOBALLIFE workshop at the Future Forces Forum 2026
To further these discussions, ECOBALLIFE will bring together stakeholders from across the European ballistic protection value chain at the Future Forces Forum 2026 in Prague.
The workshop, entitled “How Sustainability Can Be Incorporated into the Manufacturing of Protection Systems,” will take place on 21 October 2026 and will feature presentations followed by moderated panel discussions.
The event will explore how sustainability and circular economy principles can be integrated into the design, manufacturing, use and end-of-life management of personal and platform protection systems.
Building on the main findings from ECOBALLIFE, the workshop will bring together perspectives from industry, end users and public organisations. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss current challenges, identify emerging opportunities and consider priorities for the coming years.
Key topics will include:
- Sustainable design and material choices: Exploring opportunities to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining the required performance of protection systems.
- Circular manufacturing approaches: Examining how resource efficiency and circular economy principles can be incorporated into production processes.
- Lifecycle management: Considering repair, reuse, durability and end-of-life solutions for ballistic protection products.
- Collaboration across the value chain: Encouraging dialogue between industry, research organisations, end users and public stakeholders.
- Future priorities: Identifying barriers, opportunities and potential directions for more sustainable protection technologies in Europe.
Through presentations and moderated discussions, the workshop aims to connect research findings with practical perspectives from those involved in developing, manufacturing, procuring and using protection systems.
Building a more sustainable European defence ecosystem
The transition towards more sustainable ballistic protection requires cooperation across disciplines and sectors. Material innovation, manufacturing expertise, operational requirements and environmental considerations must be addressed together to identify solutions that are both technically viable and environmentally responsible.
ECOBALLIFE provides a platform for this exchange by bringing circular economy thinking into a field where protection performance and reliability remain essential. Its workshop at the Future Forces Forum will contribute to a wider conversation about the role of sustainability in the future of European defence technologies.
By connecting project results with industry experience and end-user perspectives, ECOBALLIFE seeks to support the identification of practical approaches and priorities for the next generation of protection systems.
Join ECOBALLIFE at the Future Forces Forum 2026 on 21 October to explore how sustainability can become an integral part of protection system manufacturing and lifecycle management.
