BOOSTER’S SECOND OPV DEMONSTRATOR GOES LIVE IN ITALY

BOOSTER’s second organic photovoltaics demonstrator is now fully operational in Novara, Italy. Located at Eni’s research site, the installation showcases how lightweight and flexible OPV technology can generate renewable energy while blending seamlessly with modern building design.


A Facade Designed for Energy and Architecture

The Novara demonstrator features a striking wave-inspired façade that highlights the design flexibility of organic photovoltaic technology. The installation combines energy generation with architectural appeal, demonstrating how solar solutions can become an integral part of buildings rather than simply being added on.

Key features of the installation include:

  • 136 custom-designed OPV modules
  • Approximately 40 m² of active façade surface
  • Lightweight and flexible modules integrated into polycarbonate structures
  • A reflective finish that creates a unique mirror-like appearance
  • A design tailored to the building and site requirements
  • Roll-to-roll manufactured modules that support scalable production

ASCA developed the façade concept, system design, and electrical and mechanical integration. In addition, ASCA manufactured the OPV modules using advanced materials provided by Raynergy Tek Incorporation. Eni carried out the installation and is leading the monitoring activities.


Bringing OPV Technology into real-world applications

The organic photovoltaics demonstrator shows how OPV technology can be integrated directly into building architecture. As a result, renewable energy generation can be combined with innovative design and greater flexibility.

Unlike traditional rooftop solar systems, the installation demonstrates how solar energy solutions can become part of a building’s exterior without affecting its visual appearance. Thanks to their lightweight and flexible design, OPV modules can be adapted to a variety of surfaces and structures.

Consequently, this approach opens new opportunities for building-integrated photovoltaics and the wider adoption of renewable energy in urban environments. Moreover, the project highlights the potential of OPV technology in locations where conventional solar solutions may be difficult to install.

As monitoring continues, the demonstrator will generate valuable performance data under real operating conditions. These insights will support the further development and future deployment of OPV technology.


A Collaborative Effort

The demonstrator is the result of close collaboration across the BOOSTER consortium. Throughout the project, partners have combined expertise in materials development, module manufacturing, system integration, and performance monitoring.

Together, research organisations and industry partners have contributed to every stage of the installation. Their combined efforts are helping advance the next generation of photovoltaic technologies and bringing innovative solar solutions closer to market.


Beyond the Demonstrator: BOOSTER Partners Unite in Novara

The successful commissioning of the Novara demonstrator also provided the setting for the latest BOOSTER consortium meeting, hosted by Eni in Italy.

During the meeting, partners reviewed project progress and discussed priorities for the final phase of the project. In addition, they aligned on upcoming technical, sustainability, and dissemination activities.

Participants also visited the newly commissioned demonstrator and Eni’s laboratories. This provided valuable first-hand insights into the installation process and ongoing monitoring activities.
